The 2009 Northwest Wine Summit (NWWS), now in its fourteenth year, was held at the historic Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood on May 4, 5 and 6, 2009. The Northwest Wine Summit has once again reaffirmed its position as one of America’s leading wine competition events and the largest wine competition held in the Pacific Northwest.  The 2009 event surpassed our most optimistic expectations and we are excited to further develop our relationship with hundreds of renowned wineries that participate every year in the Summit. The result was a competition that attracted the best wine produced in the North West and the best talent available to judge the more than one thousand wines entered in 2009.

One of the resounding successes of Summit 2009 was that the Summit staff instituted an innovative budget program that guarantees the sterling quality of the competition while holding the wine entry fee constant into the competition’s second decade.  Wineries will enjoy the unique opportunity to establish their products with a broad range of worldwide consumers during this critical financial period.

   The NWWS uses only professional tasting glassware to assure the best possible presentation of   the wine.

  The NWWS invites well qualified judges and maintains the strictest judging standards.

o    Judges are not allowed to participate for more than one year. The Summit's list of judging alumni is a veritable Who’s Who of the wine world.

o     One half of the judges are from the Pacific Northwest AND are associated with a winery (often as a wine-maker or a winery owner).

o    So that the NWWS can spread the word about wines of the Northwest, the remaining judges invited are influential members of the wine trade "back East."

  The NWWS is sensitive to the “less aggressive” wines. Eric Degerman of the Wine Press Northwest magazine and selected experts perform a quality assurance review to insure that each wine was served properly and judged in the appropriate flight.

  The Northwest Wine Summit purchased single bottles of commercially available wines that had not been entered and which, in the opinion of the Directors, might be needed to properly represent the spectrum of Northwest wines.  These wines were judged along with the registered paid entrants. In addition to assuring a comprehensive competition, this is one way that we deliver on our promise to our judges (most traveling to Mount Hood at their own expense) that they will receive an overview of the entire Northwest wine industry. However, if one of these earns an award, the winery will not receive a medal nor will the wine be mentioned in the results.

  The NorthWest Wine Summit is EcoFriendly. The Summit makes every effort to reuse cardboard and Styrofoam shipping containers. We recycle empty bottles and other recyclable materials. Our proprietary competition management software, OenoPro, and our web-based entry forms, allow us to minimize the use of paper, thus preserving the environment for future generations.

  The backroom staff is made up of seasoned Summit veterans that have served in judging sessions at the Wine Press Northwest and international events held in Canada and the United States. Additionally, the professional employees at the Timberline Lodge should be recognized for their ability to meld with the NWWS staff and assure a comfortable and conducive environment during the competition.

  During this year the Summit will be expanding its news releases to include over three hundred news papers and magazines in the US and Canada.  We are telling the story of our great NorthWest wines.

The NorthWest Wine Summit sincerely strives to set the standards for American competitions.

The NorthWest Wine Summit provides support to the Mount Hood Community College Hospitality & Tourism Management Program in the name of the Summit, its staff and the participating wineries.
